If you haven’t heard of her already, what’s the deal? Doechii has taken over the music industry and the internet by storm.

Jaylah Ji'mya Hickmon, also known as Doechii, is originally from Tampa, Florida, and the now 26-year-old has not only become one of the most popular rappers recently, but she made history at the Grammys. Her performance name, Doechii, originated all the way back to sixth grade when she was struggling with middle school. “‘It literally just came to me,’ she told Vulture. ‘Jaylah might’ve been getting bullied, but I decided Doechii wouldn’t stand for that … My whole attitude was different. It stuck.;” according to the Herald-Tribune.
Not only is she Doechii, but she is the “Swamp Princess”, referring to her Tampa/Florida roots. During her Grammys acceptance speech, she shouted out all of the talent that goes unrecognized from the area, “I call myself the Swamp Princess because I’m from Tampa, Florida! There’s so much culture in Tampa—whenever people think about Florida, they only think about, like, Miami, but Tampa has so much talent. Labels, go to Tampa; there’s talent there, okay?”

Doechii became one of only three women to win a Grammy for “Best Rap Album” with her mixtape “Alligator Bites Never Heal”. I must mention, this is also her first Grammy. She not only paid respects to her hometown, but also to herself as her hard work with her mental health, faith, and developing her music skills has finally paid off. "I put my heart and my soul into this mixtape. I bared my life. I went through so much. I dedicated myself to sobriety, and God told me that I would be rewarded and that he would show me just how good it can get. I have to thank God."
Personally, I believe that being vulnerable and also taking pride in your work is something very admirable. Of course being very humble is respectable, but taking credit for your hard work is something that I have learned can be hard to do but should be done, because she did the damn thing and she should own it.
Along with “Alligator Bites Never Heal”, Doechii has received a crazy amount of popularity for her remix of “Anxiety (feat. Doechii)”, a collaboration between her and the Jamaican-American artist Sleepy Hallow. Both her version, which wasn’t released, and her remix have become such a major sensation on TikTok.

Just about every comment on the reposts of her solo version of “Anxiety (feat. Doechii)” are begging and pleading her to release a full version (I was also in support of her releasing it). As the great artist she is, she listened to the fans and released her solo version of the song, which includes the instrumentals to “Somebody that I Used to Know” by Gotye.
Her single, “Anxiety”, is very relatable because it reveals her struggles with anxiety and how she “Can’t let it conquer me”, her song mentions.
Her start as an independent artist led her to release her first single in 2016 on Soundcloud, but her growth since then is extremely inspiring. Hard work pays off, and Doechii is living proof of this.
