The Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show has been a very controversial topic for quite some time now. There were a lot of negativities surrounding this show because the diet and workouts that some of the models partake in can be triggering and a message that should not be sent to their audience. They are the epitome of unrealistic beauty standards, but at the same time, that is why they were selected specifically for this show.
Victoria’s Secret was founded by Les Wexner, who is not well-liked by most people. This brand was centered around unrealistic beauty standards. The women who are the face of this company have the waist size to make you cry, legs that are long and seductive, and a face that draws anyone and everyone in. As someone with quite a few body image issues, it is really hard to see these models with the so-called “perfect” body, which is actually complete bullshit.
I distinctly remember talking to one of my therapists about this and they told me that only about 5% of the population looks like this. This fact really hit me hard and made me realize that if only 5% of the population looks like this, I should absolutely not be comparing myself to them. I started to look at these women who are angelic and enticing similar to NBA, NFL, or Olympic athletes. These are the best of the best and while it might hurt to see them and not see those same features in the mirror, I can’t think like that or I’ll go crazy.
These are the models that are the most professional and while some famous models do promote unhealthy habits, a lot of them are naturally built like that and you can’t exactly change your bone structure. Professional models do a lot more work than most people think, and if you aren’t a big name like the Hadid sisters or Cindy Crawford, you work paycheck to paycheck with very little compensation for big jobs.
Specifically for the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show, these models are the ones who are really the best of the best. Even some big-name models have been turned down for this show. This is one of the most talked about and watched fashion shows of the year. I have complete respect and desire to see haute couture and couture shows in Paris, London, and Milan, but this one is different. There is an energy that comes with the live music and the smiles stretching from ear to ear while the models carry 20-pound wings on their backs and 6-inch heels on their feet.
After years and years of people negatively talking about this show and criticizing it down to the smallest details, they canceled it in May of 2019. However, this year they are bringing it back with the Victoria’s Secret World Tour with a more body-positive and inclusive mindset. The pink carpet event in New York was just last night for the premiere of the runway show/documentary film which will be released on September 26. This film will include some of the most iconic celebrities and models such as Naomi Campbell, Adriana Lima, Candace Swanepoel, and Gigi Hadid.
While I completely understand the controversies around Victoria’s Secret and specifically this fashion show, I couldn’t be more excited to watch the show in a few weeks.
