When I say the word “supermodel” who do you think of? Most likely Bella or Gigi Hadid, Kendall Jenner, or Winnie Harlow. These models are outstanding and while these women are the ones that we have been following over the years during our lives, there is nothing that will beat the supermodels of the 90s. The recent September cover of Vogue features some of the most iconic and legendary supers and the impact they have had on the fashion industry.
Naomi Campbell is someone that almost everybody knows in the fashion industry. She has had so many memorable runway moments such as the iconic hair flip for the Fall/Winter 1999/2000 Versace show. Cindy Crawford’s commercial for Pepsi during the Superbowl with her white tank top and denim shorts is a picture that countless amount of people have seen. Linda Evangelista and her spotlight on the Chanel 1991 Fall/Winter runway with almost a hip-hop Chanel look is a moment that people will remember for a very long time. Christy Turlington’s Spring 1993 Chanel runway show where she wore a black pearl-lined Chanel bathing suit will go down in history.
These are only a few of these models' most memorable moments. Now, the September 2023 issue of Vogue will go down in history to reminisce on one of the best runway eras in fashion history. All 4 supermodels come together and prove to everyone that they can make any garment and even the most basic outfits look captivating, and of course, they appear effortlessly beautiful.
However, what many people, including myself at times, don’t always realize is that they are ordinary people too. They definitely have extraordinary lives, but they are still normal women with anxiety, stress, and all the emotions at the end of the day. The modeling industry is hard as hell, and it can really take a toll on these legends. In an interview with Vogue’s Sally Singer, Naomi said, “There was a sisterhood there, defined by caring and loyalty: When one is down you pick the other one up.”
While most of the population remembers these women in their teens or 20s, they are now full-grown adults with kids and marriages, but that doesn’t mean they are slowing down. Naomi Campbell is now Dr. Naomi Campbell and runs a charity for adversity in the fashion industry, Fashion for Relief. Cindy Crawford now had a beauty and skincare brand dedicated to giving people more confidence in their appearance. Linda Evangelista has been very open about a botched cosmetic surgery and the effects it has had on her mental health. Christy Turlington founded Every Mother Counts, which aids mothers around the world during their pregnancy and childbirth.
Naomi, Cindy, Linda, and Christy have already conquered the fashion industry, and now they are going for the world.
