The concept of an “It girl” has been around for longer than we think. There have been so many It girls in the past even if you didn’t realize it and they have created the “definition” or qualities of what it takes. A few of these iconic women have been Cindy Crawford, Audrey Hepburn, Cher, Britney Spears, and Emma Stone. While this may not be a new concept, the It girl of different generations and years is always changing, but who do you think will be the It girl of Generation Z? There are quite a few options that we have for a Gen Z It girl, especially with the rise of social media stars. The choices for this can vary from person to person but these are my 6 “submissions”.

First up in the running is Emma Chamberlain. If you have watched any YouTube at all in the past maybe 5 years, you have probably heard of the one and only Emma Chamberlain. Chamberlain was one of the first ones to take her social media career and use it to make her more of a celebrity. She does not do much social media anymore (except of course Instagram), but you will see her in magazines, collaborating with fashion brands, podcasting, and interviewing A-List celebrities at the Met Gala. She has been a comfort character for me and many other people as her relatability is what made her so popular. Chamberlain is very open about mental health and social anxiety which is something that is not talked about much online due to the desire to appear perfect and put together, I truly applaud her for breaking down that wall.

Victoria Paris is someone I look to when I need any kind of inspiration. Whether it is interior design, fashion, jewelry, makeup, or life aesthetics in general, I will immediately go to her account and see what’s going on. Paris has been significantly growing her account, but she really made her way through people’s For You Pages this summer with her famous Eurosummer. She spent almost the entire summer in Europe, mainly Paris, traveling all around, meeting new people, and even going on dates with a guy she met in an elevator, we all call him “Elevator Man”. This iconic summer of hers was an inspiration to many when it came to traveling alone. Many people are scared to travel alone, myself included before her, but she showed the realistic side of it and conveyed how you can make new friends and have the experience of a lifetime all the while enjoying your own company.

Bella Hadid. Does she even need an introduction? In 2022 she was named Model of the Year by the British Fashion Council, I mean wow. She is an absolute force to be reckoned with within the modeling/fashion industry. Her presence in the fashion world is displayed by her iconic street style which has different styles and edges to it that give an overall “cool” energy. We all know the Coperni Spring 2023 show where she had her supermodel moment. The spray-on dress during that show really gave her that supermodel title and it was life-changing for the fashion world. All the while she is fiercely owning the runway, she also struggles with Lyme disease and had to take a good amount of time off because of it. A few months ago, the model opened up about her recent struggles with the disease and showed pictures of her in treatment and getting help because her health was declining. This is something that inspires me because if someone so intensely in the public eye can be open about her struggles, I can do the same. Hadid was named one of the top 100 most influential people of 2023 by TIME which is such an honor for her, and it is a well-deserved title.

Next up, we have Alex Consani. Consani is an absolute star on the runway and just dominated the SS 24-season catwalk. She did countless amount of runway shows for big names like Ferragamo, Tom Ford, Mugler, and many other luxury brands. While she kills whatever runway she is walking, her presence on TikTok and other social media platforms has really boosted her name. She is the epitome of “Gen Z humor” and is not afraid to show her personality off on the app. Somehow, she appears to just have no fear and will dance or do a funny trend on the streets of New York, Italy, or wherever she is for a show. Even during a backstage interview, she is completely herself and has the most random funny answers to whatever is being asked of her. When she was younger, she didn’t really see someone to look to for trans representation in the modeling industry, and now she hopes to fulfill that role for other potential trans models.

The next potential It Girl has been absolutely blowing up not only on social media but the music industry in general. Olivia Rodrigo broke the music industry when she originally released Sour in 2021 and once again this year, very recently, when she released GUTS. In 2021 she broke the record for most songs in the top 10 by a woman at one time for her album Sour, when she was only 18 years old. Looking at Rodrigo’s life is crazy for me because we are the same age, and it is inspiring to see someone as young as her have so much success and support behind her. Her Gen Z rage due to her breakups and boy troubles and power as a young woman is what drives her songs to be so relatable and go viral almost instantly. Her songs have reached the top of the charts and because of all her hard work and success, she has amassed a minimum of 20 awards total, some being Grammys, iHeart Radio Music Awards, MTV, and AMA’s. Just last month she added 18 new dates to her GUTS world tour where she will go everywhere from Palm Springs, CA to Amsterdam, Netherlands.

Finally, we have Sabrina Carpenter, she is a name that I have known for quite a long time now. Carpenter started on Disney Channel as an actress in a show that I was regularly watching, Girl Meets World. After the show ended, she did a few more Disney years and then she broke free and really showed her true personality and who she is without Disney toning her down. In my opinion, she is a true pop star and has become a huge name that a lot of people might underestimate. She started to go viral on Tik Tok for the ending of her song, “Nonsense”, where every time she performs it live, she creates a unique little outro that is personal to the city she is touring in. I feel as if there hasn’t been a true popstar like her in a long time, maybe since Britney, and I love the miniskirts and how whenever I see a new video of her, the skirt gets a little shorter and there’s a little more shine and glitter. I mean, how could you not call her a pop star? Her tour for her album, emails i can’t send, was all over social media, and everyone, including myself, was keeping up with her and wanting to be there for the live performance to just experience her energy. Her website even matches the title of her album, so it looks like you are going through your email, she is so creative.
